There are a lot of reasons that people go out and buy cast irons pans even with all the choices out there. Those reasons all contribute to people who are loyal cast iron pan owners. Many of those people have not just a skillet or two, they also have other kinds of pans.

A cast iron skillet, or any cast iron pan, is actually a very versatile pan. They can be used when camping, over an open fire or camp stove. They can also be used at home on any stove, including induction stoves, or even in the oven.

A cast iron skillet pan provides a nice even heat and cooks well. Because of the seasoning they give the food a great flavor. But cast iron pans have very particular care needs.

When a person first gets an iron skillet they need to make sure it gets season properly. Not only will this make sure that the skillet is protected and has a non-stick finish, it also makes sure that the pan can start giving good flavor to all the food cooked in it.

The way to start seasoning a cast iron pan is to liberally oil it with vegetable oil. Once the pan has been completely wiped down, including the handle and outsides then it needs to get put into the oven. The recommended setting is 450-500 F for around 1/2 hour. After that 1/2 hour the pan should sit in the oven and cool down to room temperature. It's not a quick process, but it's a necessary one. The more times it's done the better the seasoning on the pan. Most people recommend that it gets done 3-5 times before the pan is even used. The process needs to be occasionally repeated to maintain a good season on the pan, maybe once every 6 months.

When it is time to wash the cast iron skillet pan there are two schools of thought. One is that it should only be wiped down with warm water. It needs to be dried, water should never sit in the pan, because even with the seasoning that promotes rust. The other school of thought is that it's OK to use a very mild dish soap. Again, the pan needs to be dried off almost immediately. Whatever way the pan gets washed a scratchy pad should never, ever be used. Not only will it damage the seasoning, it will also damage the pan. Only a soft sponge or soft cloth should every be used on a cast iron skillet.

The more the cast iron skillet gets used, the better the seasoning on it will be. It will pick up the flavors of all the foods that have been cooked before, which only enhances the way that food will taste. The way food tastes is unique to a cast iron pan.

By following just a few easy steps a cast iron skillet pan can last for a very long time.
