Prevent an Injury For a Long and Healthy Career in Massage Therapy

Massage and bodywork is now a major component in the health care field. Massage therapy is a more accepted therapeutic modality than it was in the past. The demand for massage treatment has created a need for more professional therapists. Schools are not taking the time to train the students on how to care for and properly use their body. The demand for massage is greater but the techniques are taught with more intricacy and depth. Injury prevention is important and the therapists must understand the importance of self-care to avoid an injury. Bodyworkers must know what their predispositions and prior injuries are and learn how to use their body correctly. It is of utmost importance to care for your body before, during, and after performing a massage.

Schools and employers must place importance on body mechanics and self-care together. Some companies look more at the numbers and profit than the protection of the therapist. In many instances, therapists are not allowed more than five minutes between appointments and can work an eight to ten hour shifts. Employers can not have the mentality of thinking that each therapist is a number.

On the other hand, therapists think of themselves as caregivers and believe it is not acceptable to be injured because they have the tendency to put others needs before their own. I believe that bodyworkers feel shame when they become injured. Repetitive strain injury is very high in this field and if the situation is going to improve, bodyworkers need to stand up and voice what is going on with them so that other therapists will feel more comfortable to do so. Shame will only make having an injury worse. If you say nothing and work through your injury, you could make the situation worse. Feeling fear is common when you have symptoms of an injury because you may be fearful of losing your income or your job. It is too bad that you have to be afraid when it comes to using your body for your work. Priorities need to be set so that your body's needs are being put first. You have to have awareness of your own body and stop doing the activity when certain symptoms arise in order to avoid becoming your own worst enemy.

Schools, employers, and therapists must work together to create a safe and friendly environment for everyone involved. This environment should allow healing to take place. A therapist that takes care of his/her self can give to and nurture their client properly.
