Planning is the process of analyzing situations, identifying options, considering alternatives, determining what will be done, by whom and when. Planning is one of the five basic functions of leadership and management. A great myth of American management is that we like to plan and do a great job of planning. Well, sometimes we are not as effective as we'd like to think. So, let's take another look at planning.
The cost effective leader is an effective planner. With the cost, regulatory and competitive pressures of today, planning is more critical than ever before in business. In some organizations products or services are produced by dedicated people and "brute force" rather than through planned and efficient processes. Successful organizations break out of this trap and focus on planning and executing their plans.
Planning involves strategy and operations. Strategies for your organization should flow from the mission and vision for the organization. From the strategies, the operational plans (or tactics as some like to say) should be deployed through each operating area of the organization. From these plans the specific goals and objectives for departments and/or individuals are established and deployed.
Plans should be as specific as possible. The details of what is to be done, by whom and when are all vital to achieving your objectives. Now, the plans are in place, what next? Follow-up. Management review meetings are a solid forum for reviewing plans and results. The focus needs to be on the results, not the activities!
