George Stephanpoulos was interviewing the Treasury Secretary about measures the government was contemplating to help pull the country out of the longest recession since Word War 2. I guess George didn't have time to ask Geithner (who has been called the Tax Cheat by many in the media and across the country) if he planned to actually pay the taxes he believes it might be necessary to raise.
After all, Geithner says they must be prepared to "do whatever it takes".
Times may even be desperate enough for members of the Administration to follow the laws that they pass and are sworn to uphold.
Desperate times call for desperate measures
Raising taxes in a recession: well, it will allow the government to temporarily collect more revenue to spend on programs that add to the deficit. I guess that makes sense to some people who are looking to grab a positive headline ion the short term.
Wait a minute?! Wasn't short term thinking and quarterly results the classic narrative about the poor quality of US management in the car industry and cost the GM CEO his job? That's right, it's different if the government does it.
I wonder why the government isn't subject to monopoly laws?
The Framers' ideas actually did set up a system whereby one level of government didn't monopolize public functions, but federalism hasn't been seen lately; A hint of a whisper of the shadow of the memory of federalism hasn't been seen lately.
So, if more people are filing for unemployment, and more people have just stopped looking for work, and the government wants to increase the stipends, and increase the length of time you can collect benefits and wants to raise taxes on the fewer people who are still working, exactly how is this not the image of a giant mouth with an insatiable appetite that is eating itself faster each day?
The US: all appetite and mouth, no brain. maybe we have already eaten our brains?!
