The direction you take your nursing career depends largely on how much schooling you are willing to endure and in what capacity you wish to work.
Licensed Practical Nurse
LPNs are in great demand and they often do most of the basic work that needs to be done. They take temperatures, blood pressure, pulse, give shots and monitor patients among other hands on tasks. Becoming an LPN requires less schooling than becoming an RN. So, many people choose to practice nursing as an LPN while they continue their education to become an RN.
Registered Nurse
Registered nursing requires more schooling than Licensed practical nursing and if you wish to specialize in a specific field of medicine you will need even more schooling or training. Generally, RNs work in a hospital setting in a wide array of different capacities. Nurses can work as surgical assistants, they can specialize in being a mid-wife and they can get into nurse management among many other specialties. The RN degree offers far more options for career diversity than the LPN does and generally RNs make more money.
Certified Nursing Assistants
Nurses aides or nursing assistants work under the supervision of a registered nurse and they provide basic patient care. Some of their responsibilities may include bathing patients, grooming patients, feeding patients and assisting the nursing staff with checking vital signs and medical equipment. CNAs don't make a ton of money but they are only required to have a high school diploma or GED along with completion of a 6-12 week can program. Often, people use this career to advance into another field of nursing.
Multi-Skilled Technician
Many hospitals and health facilities along with doctor's offices are using multi skilled technicians now. Multi skilled technicians are capable of doing a myriad of clinical tasks including taking blood, performing diagnostic tests like EKG, placing IVs and carrying out basic patient care. The schooling for this career path takes about 12 months to complete and multi skilled technicians often make as much as an LPN and more than a certified nurse's aide. It is an ideal choice of careers for somebody who wants to be hands on with patients but desires a greater salary and more responsibilities than a nurse's aide.
