 Intestinal Health and Detoxification

Many people become squeamish when discussing intestinal health. Societal rules allow discussion only among very intimate friends, family, or in medical situations. However, this cultural taboo has created a society that is sick, tired, and uncomfortable. Often, the assumption is that diarrhea or constipation are the first signs that something is amiss digestively. Gas, bloating, and heartburn are often other early symptoms of digestive problems. More serious issues like colitis, Irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, intestinal polyps and cancers that often require serious medical attention could be avoided if only proper digestive health had been practiced earlier.

Toxin levels in the human body are most easily controlled by food choices. The intestines are important because they are the first line of defense against food-borne illness, as well as removing toxins from the liver. When this process is slowed or stopped, this creates a chance for harmful bacteria to flourish, or even worse, for cancerous cells to develop. A common problem that occurs is that these toxins create pockets in the intestines called diverticula. Another problem is that when toxins build up in the intestines, they can leak into the blood vessels and spread throughout the body, poisoning all body systems. Common problems that are often linked to improperly functioning bowels are allergies, headaches, PMS, brain fog, bad breath, dark circles under the eyes, acne, and more. Several studies have linked slow bowel transit time to breast diseases and cancer!

In order to understand why these diseases are related to intestinal health, a person must first understand the role of the intestines in the body. The intestines are the final stage of digestion. The intestines absorb water, minerals, and other nutrients. Beneficial bacterial that live in the intestines break down food residues and keep harmful bacteria and other organisms in check. Poisons, toxins, and wastes are eliminated. Certain B vitamins and vitamin K are created as well. The intestines also provide about 60% of the immune system, in the Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT). This prevents invasion by bacteria, fungus, yeast, and parasites.

Hopefully by now, it is evident that the intestines play a large part in the health of the body. Check out article #2, entitled "Common Causes of Intestinal Problems."
