Obesity - Hunger is the #1 Diet Enemy

Obesity has North American men and women bursting at the seams. Hunger is a primal instinct gone wild, making it the #1 diet enemy. The body requires nourishment and when those hunger pangs hit, there is no denying the stomach call for food. It is a fact of life. We must eat! Poor food choices contribute to continual weight gain and ultimately to obesity.

Hunger is a natural response of the body to the need for nourishment which is the fuel for human energy. Our ancestors had a very different relationship with food than we do today. In the past humans had to go out to hunt and gather their food. These hunter/gatherers used up as much energy finding food as they received from eating it. The process of hunting and gathering food was regular, strenuous exercise that did not always yield an abundance of food, depending on the season.

Times have changed drastically and the availability of food from supermarkets or food store does not require the same amount of energy as hunting. When hunger strikes it is very easy to make poor food choices.  Fast foods, high in fat and calories, are readily available and have become a staple in many households. Giving in to these temptations sabotages any weight loss efforts.

Hunger can not be denied. If you try to ignore it, the call for food becomes louder and stronger. Everyone has experienced a growling stomach at one time or another. Implementing a healthy eating plan that recognizes the different stages of hunger is a good way to nourish the body and promote healthy weight loss.

The spectrum of hunger ranges from starving to be being over stuffed. Ignoring hunger is a sure way to put yourself in a position to overeat. At both ends of the spectrum your body will likely be uncomfortable. The longer you wait to eat the more likely your appetite will reach the starvation stage.  You are ravenous and you will eat until you are overstuffed. You will be ready to eat anything and everything in sight. If you have a lot of junk food in the house chances are that is what you will choose to eat to silence that thunderous growling.

Hunger, not willpower, is the #1 enemy of any diet. Hunger is a natural response of the self preservation instinct. It is the alert that your body needs nutrition to replenish the energy spent to keep the body functioning at optimal level. This primal urge, however, does not discriminate between healthy or unhealthy food choices. It is just the alert that it is time to eat and hunger will be satisfied with whatever you choose to eat.

Learning to recognize and satisfy your hunger before it gets out of control is the first step to developing an effective eating plan for weight loss. Following dietary guidelines and planning to have healthy food choices available to satisfy your hunger will keep your appetite under control. Moderate hunger is the optimal signal that you should nourish your body. Generally, 3 small meals and 3 snacks a day spaced at about 3-4 hour intervals will keep you satisfied so you do not overeat. Controlling hunger will help you to win the battle against obesity.
