This article is a revision from an article I posted on my blog last August, and I thought it was appropriate to further this discussion to a broader audience. A very good friend of mine from Boca Raton FL. John G. Barbar sent me an email that referenced an article by Mark Sanborn. Mark writes "Why Leaders Fail" for the Leadership Wired publication. I found this article to be right on and interestingly enough Mark's warning sign #2 runs hand in hand with a book I published last July, "Why Can't We Say What We Mean" (Developing meaningful business relationships through effective communication) I conduct 13 interviews with highly successful leaders and entrepreneurs about the area of communication. I asked these 13 interviewees what it takes to be a success communicator. We discuss the characteristics of what makes a good communicator, we discussed mind set, personal fulfillment, and relationship building. The issue of relationship building appeared to be the most important aspect of communication in the current business climate.
Sanborn goes on to say, "Say what you mean, and mean what you say" is timeless advice, but it must be preceded by knowing what you mean! Clarity of purpose is the starting point for all effective communication. The hard work of communication only pays dividends when you're crystal clear about your message."
But I would go further to say that it is not just clarity, but rather true deep rooted relationship building. In my book I interview Larry Benet. Here is an excerpt for Larry's interview.... "I think today a lot of business is driven by relationships, and yet, I think some people are just naturally gifted. If you study most industries, normally the top people are not only thoughtful leaders, but they're also very well connected, very well plugged into their communities, depending on what kind of business. It could be very statewide or even nationally recognized, in terms of resources and strategic relationships.
One of the things I really teach is communication strategies, strategies that connect with anyone, anytime, anywhere. More importantly, how do you create a meaningful relationship, especially with a high-profile, busy, influential leader in someone's industry?"
Well I am here to tell you this process in not a difficult as it may seem on the surface, and I would like to provide Three key points to help this discussion along further. I will go into greater detail in future articles.
First, leadership and communication are strategically bound by this key point and that is that one will never get to the leadership role without followers. This may seem, on the surface as, elementary but I contend that it is not. Now just hang in there for a moment. We have seen leaders that were good orators and had great following, but they really did not build relationships and really lead. I don't think I need to elaborate on those, but that they were killed by the hands of their followers or by their own hand. Were they being clear as to their intention, yes and no, but was the value altruistic in nature. I think not.
Secondly, those followers must believe that what they are receiving from that leadership is value based. Example, today we see an enormous amount of guru type individuals spouting their ability to lead followers to the promise land of fruit and honey when it comes to getting rich or becoming a millionaire. I am here to say that the process of leadership and communication (the internet) is not an effective way to build a strong relationship of leadership. In these cases clarity is not obvious and that is intentional. The only one that is gaining value is the crook who calls themselves a guru leader.
Thirdly, when you have a leadership and you have communication, bi-directionally. You still may not have a good leadership and effective communication if the vision of what is trying to be accomplish. For example, my good friend and business associate Kandee G. of KG Enterprises as proven with 30 plus years of research that leader A can not lead group B to success of the mission without a Collective Vision Â. This Collective Vision can be completely satisfied and prosper without collective communication, value based for all involved, and all involved must feel as though they are part of the process and success.
I could go on for hours about this topic and I will in future articles. My hope is that we are seeing a massive shift in the process of communication and the way everyone gets what they want, including leaders. I look forward to your comments and a dialog of where the future of human communication has in store for us all.
