As a nation we are becoming fatter and fatter. Pay attention when you are out. Watch how some moms and dads actually fill their kid's bottles with soda! Not to mention the sugary snacks they give them to keep them quiet.
We are starting bad habits in our kids, some so young they don't have a choice.
The list that follows is absolutely frightening. I have two children of my own, and luckily weight has yet to become an issue, but I am constantly monitoring what they eat throughout the day.
So, just what the health risks?
1. Heart Disease - Caused by poor eating habits and the extra strain on the heart. Â Â
2. Diabetes - Type 2 diabetes has become increasingly widespread among overweight children.
3. Asthma - An alarming number of children that are overweight have asthma.
4. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) - Overweight children are more likely to have high blood pressure that can put added pressure on the heart.
 Â
5. Liver Problems - Children who are obese are at higher risk for developing a liver problem.
6. Obstructive Sleep Apnea - Or trouble sleeping - Children who are overweight are at risk for obstructive sleep apnea, which is a serious, breathing disorder defined by short interruptions of breathing while sleeping. This can, over a long period of time, lead to heart failure.
7. Gallstones -- The frequency of gallstones is significantly higher in children who are obese.
8. Menstrual Problems - Being overweight may cause a girl to reach puberty at an earlier than normal age, leading to menstrual irregularities later in life.
9. Orthopedic Complications - Obesity can damage the cartilage in children's legs because it is unable to bear all that extra weight. This is because our kids are still in the developmental stages of growing.
What is alarming is that by developing bad eating habits, and not exercising regularly, at such a young age, you are almost guaranteed that obesity will carry over into adulthood. It is an extremely difficult cycle to break.
