This committed, burdened, and concerned man considered himself to be beastly at times. The writer of Psalm 73 considered himself to be beastly. What a thing to say about yourself. That is a strong description of how a man might be feeling! He had to learn how to control his feelings and his emotions. All leaders must learn this vital lesson.
In the New Testament, in the letter to the Corinthian disciples of Jesus Christ, Paul writes about how to discipline the body. He controlled his body. This mighty spiritual leader knew how to discipline his body, so that he would be fit and equipped physically for the work he had to do for Jesus Christ. He would not waste his time shadow boxing!
Paul, like Asaph, the writer of Psalm 73, knew how to deal with that horrid thing called sin.
Our most constant enemy is self. As a result of the fall of Adam we are self centred. We become sensitive about ourselves. The psychology of the Psalmist and Paul, and wholeness of Jesus Christ, and so much more, is all encapsulated in this one volume from Almighty God. If a man were to neglect these lessons he would certainly be the loser.
There is an insight here of immense value. When his heart was grieved and his spirit embittered, this man's live went so wrong. It was not the ungodly that was the real issue. It was his heart!
It was not his surroundings or environment which was all wrong. It was his heart.
His heart controlled his head. His heart influenced his brain, and his thinking, and his attitude and his actions. He was governed by his feelings, and his sensibilities, rather than by Almighty God and His Word.
When the heart takes over, it can make us unreasonable. It can cloud our thinking, but, it was in the sanctuary, in the presence of Almighty God, that he realised his real problem.
In Paul's letter to the Church of Jesus Christ at Philippi, he writes that we should not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving present your requests unto God, and the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Now, there is leadership for you, which deals with various aspects of our lives.
Paul, are you saying the order is important? Yes I am, he virtually thunders. It is hearts and minds, not minds and hearts! This is profound.
Paul, you are a master physician in the matters of the soul and the mind, as well as the emotions and the body!
Paul knew we are quite unable, and that it is quite pointless, to deal with the mind, until the heart is put right! Our feelings can blind us to everything else.
When there are so many various needs in the world and where strong positive leadership is so necessary, here is the guidance and direction which each of us requires.
If you are aspiring to leadership does this speak to and appeal to you and help answer some of your dilemmas?
