Position power comes in all shapes and sizes. From captain of the little league baseball team to President of the United States. Power is the authority to have control or direct the effort of others. My first grade teacher was regal in her position power. She had the power to control nearly everything in our one room country school. I remember her with total respect and awe, although she could make you quake in your shoes.
Exercising power honestly sounds simple, but here are 4 critical choices to be honest with "yourself"...honest with your intentions.
1. Decide what purpose is your power. What outcome does the organization want...and what outcome do you want with others?
2. Power to "control." Control is a counter intuitive or negative characteristic running in conflict with freedom. If you're a air traffic controller, we sure hope you're controlling the airplane traffic. On the other hand if you're captain of your little league baseball team and your intention is to control whether "Jimmy" gets to play is an ugly use of power.
3. Power to "get results." I suspect management books are overflowing with examples of position power for the purpose of getting results. It may be to plan, direct, control the organization if you're a manager. Or getting results may be a team of 3 and you're the team leader and leading a project is your job. There is nothing inherently moral or immoral about getting results. Getting results can be either good or bad.
4. Power to "help others." Could this be the motivation to become a pastor, a lawyer, a Doctor, a policeman. The answer could be yes to each of these. Helping others rises to a spiritual level...doing good...
Position power is neither good or bad. Neither good or evil. From President to pastor, the person of power may choose any of these purposes. Simply be honest with your intentions.
