Nurses are stressed no matter where you work, in a hospital, in home care, at a clinic, or for a registry. Your responsibilities create some of the stress. Here are 7 critical areas where you need to focus on to reduce work related stress.
Area 1 Charting - Whether you chart on paper or with the computer or with both, you must be consistent, detailed and updating all the time. Make your entries as soon as possible while assessment details are fresh. Keeping your narratives short but concise may be a problem at times, so ask a second nurse for a clarification if you have difficulty putting your impressions into words.
Area 2 Thinking - Critical thinking skills must be cultivated. Unless you were born with the gift of analytical and critical thinking you have to put some effort into thinking both objectively and subjectively at any given time. This skill gets easier with experience in your specialty or if you really have a passion for your specialty.
Area 3 Empathy - Putting yourself in someone else's position may be hard at first. Some trainers will suggest role playing, being the patient with a particular problem will sometimes spark the flame of empathy a nurse must have to make good decisions.
Area 4 Home care nursing - Working with patients and families in their own homes, brings lots of stresses into the picture. You can actually absorb the stress of a family member and it will be added to your already stressed condition. Family dynamics is something the social worker on your team can help with so you can spend the necessary time caring for the patient.
Area 5 People wanting medical advice - This is a very big stressor for some nurses because you have to be mindful of your boundaries with the general public and of course your friends and family. Really be careful what you say and how you say it. Some times a little general information is better them lots of specifics. Let the other person come to their own conclusions, empowerment will reduce your stress.
Area 6 Newbie Nurses - The old saying "nurses eat their own" is still very true. By carefully picking a mentor will help you to get over the feeling of abandonment. Always be open to suggestions when your enthusiasm may be too much.
Area 7 The reality that health care is big business - You are a part of a very big business of customer service. You will be very stressed when your ideals of caring and curing get pushed around by consumer surveys and cost containment. Always keep your level of integrity high and the patient's well being paramount.
