For years, your IQ or intelligence was thought to be of primary importance. However, Daniel Goleman has shown the your EQ or emotional intelligence is far more important to business or even personal success.
Daniel Goleman author of Working with Emotional Intelligence is considered by many to be the expert on emotional intelligence and how it plays within the business world as people engage in their daily roles from CEOs to sales managers to frontline employees. No longer being just the expert will get you or your business to where it needs to be. You must be able to get along with people through your personal qualities or traits such as initiative, empathy, adaptability, optimism, resilience and persuasiveness.
Using detailed research, Goleman supports his claim that EQ is more important than IQ in today's global marketplace. Emotional intelligence is learned and is always evolving, maturing to that next level on the continuum. He addresses that even though 4 out of 5 companies in a 1997 survey wanted to improve this way of thinking, the efforts were not as successful as they should have been.
This almost 400 page book is a treasure trove of research along with his insight. He provides a fairly detailed index and his chapter notes are provide additional knowledge.
Some of the key areas of discussion specific to emotional intelligence in organization include:
Exploring the competencies of what makes star performers so good. This is detailed in Chapter 2 and reveals why IQ is probably secondary to EQ.
Being in consultative services specific to human capital talent, I liked how he made a very strong case for soft skills in Chapter 3. One golden gem was "emotional competencies were fond to be twice as important" when compared to IQ and expertise.
Chapter 8 looked at influence and the importance of this competency in business especially in leadership and sales.
Another great area that he addressed was a new model of learning. With much of the training dollars not generating a positive return on investment, Goleman confronts this billion-dollar mistake and suggests some new best training and development practices.
This book is more a field guide in how to use emotional intelligence within your organization and for yourself. If you wish to move your business to that next level, then invest a few dollars and at least several hours to read this dynamic book.
