The term critical thinking is a word often used in relationship to the NCLEX-RN yet no one seems to explain what it is exactly. It is a way of thinking based on knowledge that requires that the individual analyze the subject matter on various different levels. Herein lies the problem in the real world a nurse receives a client and proceeds to perform an assessment and follows the steps of the nursing process from the beginning to the end. On the NCLEX-RN question number one could be an evaluation, the next question could be an implementation and it can for many become confusing.
HNS classes nursing seminars deal with this vary issue in real time. When a student enters the conference room that student will be in the same room with others students across the nation of in perhaps another country. The instructor will lecture but at the same time engage the student in questions to allow the instructor to understand how the student thinks. Many times a student can answer a multiple choice answer correctly but when questioned as to the reason they chose the particular answer the response is incorrect. This can present a serious problem on the NCLEX-RN given its adaptive format even if the answer is correct on the first question, the following may actually be asking the candidate to answer the rationale behind the answer and if you dont know it more and more questions may result in that particular area or subject.
Moreover, critical thinking involves the nurse developing the skill to be capable of dealing with the issues in front of him or her while at the same time analyzing the consequences or particular risks that may or may not occur. The ability to do this is not something that can be developed overnight it takes time and coaching something which only the HNS prep classes provide.
Finally, if a nurse does not learn to think critically it will affect the efficiency and effectiveness of his or her practice.
