Something strange happened on the way to living out the concept called the Kingdom of God! The historical Jesus (even if just metaphorical- the same principle applies) stories turned the world upside down. No one person has so greatly impacted the world as has Jesus, who became the Christos. His core teaching was the Kingdom of God and he simply said, FOLLOW ME!Â
Now, when one looks at the stories about Jesus and where those who SAY that they are Christians, meaning that they think they are FOLLOWING him, are it appears there is a major disconnect!
It doesn't matter to me if people call Jesus a high priest as the writer(s) of the book of Hebrews advocates; however, Jesus never called himself a priest. But when you get down to some basic core principles, what Jesus said and did and what the "Christian" church does today are greatly different. There's a BIG TIME difference!
Let me not EQUIVOCATE in any fashion as I say the following!
>Jesus didn't intend to form a new religion
>Jesus said nothing about the hierarchy of churches that exist today
>Jesus didn't promote doctrines, creeds, cathedrals and all the dogma that we have today.
Without belaboring the points, could we not draw the conclusion from what's read in the Gospels that Jesus (as did Paul) clearly expected the end of the world to come within a generation. His admonition and encouragement was that we begin to live from WITHIN which is where the Kingdom of God resides (Luke 17:21). Thus Jesus was demonstrating the Kingdom by his LIFE. Follow me means exactly that. Dying to self though is surely not what church history has demonstrated. In fact, church history has been about OTHERS dying- not it.
How have we missed the message? Where did we get off the path? How long will it take for us to get back on the road to the Kingdom life that Jesus lived. Aren't those three questions worth seriously considering?
