This article will encourage you to follow seven tips to avoid stroke, which will server as preventive strategies against the risk of stroke and heart disease. How does a stroke occur? It starts when there is a blockage of blood supply to a certain part of the brain. When a brain's blood vessel bursts because of the accumulation of blood, damage is caused to the brain, causing brain attack or stroke.

Survivors of stroke tend to suffer from post-stroke disabilities relating to their emotional, mental, and speech capabilities. According to World Health Organization statistics, about 15 million people suffer from stroke each year. Five million out of the 15 million die, while the rest become disabled afterwards.

The seven tips on how to avoid stroke are as follows:

1. Stop smoking: If you quit early, the tendency for you to experience brain attack is less. Cigarettes contain carbon monoxide and nicotine responsible for lesser oxygen flow to the blood. Smoking greatly damages the blood vessel walls and contributes to the formation of blood clots.

2. Treat hypertension: If you detect, prevent, and treat high blood pressure early, the risk of having a brain attack is less. You must eat less salty and fatty foods.

3. Say no to cholesterol: If you have high cholesterol, you have higher risks in suffering from heart and brain attacks. Having a low-fat and low-salt diet and eating lots of fiber-rich foods make your life a lot healthier.

4. Avoid diabetes: If you have high sugar content in your body, you have higher risks for stroke. Diabetes is manageable if you have good eating habits.

5. Have a healthy weight: Height and weight play an important role in knowing your body mass index, or BMI, an instrument used for knowing whether you are obese or not. Part of having a healthy weight is for you to maintain physical exercise and a balanced diet.

6. Eat fish: It has a lot of omega-3 which nourishes the brain and our heart.

7. Drink alcohol moderately: Drink in moderation for too much alcohol will give you high blood pressure.
