When the body tissues get inflamed, this means that the illness is active. When inflammation temporarily subsides, this means that the illness is in a remission state or is inactive. These remissions of the symptoms can happen spontaneously or they can be brought about by active treatment. The period of remission can last for long periods of time, from weeks to years. Of course, during this period of remission, the patient would feel well overall. However, this period does not last forever, as the rheumatoid arthritis can become active again anytime.
Nevertheless, active treatment can invariably lessen the effects of the arthritis rheumatoid symptoms. In medical terminology, this return to the active state of the illness is called a "flare".
