Most of our hemorrhoids are only temporary and may come and go, but for many such as myself who had them for years you may have to result to one of several medical solutions to treat them.
Whilst most 1st & 2nd degree ones go away on their own if you avoid constipation or use hemorrhoid cream or suppositories (which should never be used for more than a week), 3rd degree ones may persist and need treating in hospital.
There are many medical solution to cure piles and only a small number of people require an operation. Most 3rd degree ones are treated by banding or injections. Both of these do not require a general anesthetic or overnight for stay in hospital.
Banding treatment for piles - This involves placing a small rubber band around the base of it, thus strangling the pile, it then dies and falls off naturally, with only some minor scarring. It is one of the most common treatments and effective, the only major drawback being severe bleeding in some instances. Another drawback is you may feel faint and nauseous after the bands are put on. Also you may experience some pain for the next 2-3 days.
To show the effectiveness of banding:
79% of piles are cured totally for good.
In 18% of people it returns so that repeat banding is needed
For 2% of sufferers, it does not work at all resulting in the need for surgery
Injections - Injecting Phenol in almond oil produces a permanent cure in only about 25% of people, it also leaves more scarring. Less common in than banding due to lower success rate.
Surgery  - There are several surgical treatments available. Commonly the hemorrhoid is cut out under general anesthetic, and can be painful for 7-14 days after. A second type of operation, called stapling, involves cutting away a small strip of the lining of the rectum and stapling them together.  This option offers a faster method of recovery and is now common in the rest of Europe. However it appears less effective in the long-term with people requiring further operations.
