The Effects That Obesity Can Have on Your Children

A common excuse used by parents to describe their child's excess weight is "puppy fat". This could be the first sign that your child is overweight or obese. Their health could be in danger.

Find out your child's BMI

Calculating your child's BMI (body mass index) is the first step to finding out if your child is overweight or obese. The body mass index is calculated by using their weight and height. A BMI reading of 30 or more indicates that the person or child is severely overweight or obese.

The health risks-if you continue to ignore your child's weight gain then their health risks will increase. The most fatal risk is heart disease which can rarely be reversed. Your child could also develop type 2 diabetes which could also be fatal. High blood pressure and high cholesterol can also cause heart problems. These health problems are serious but if your child continues to gain weight they are also likely to develop mobility problems.

Psychological problems - if your child continues to eat large amounts of food their brain will begin to crave food. The stomach may be full but the brain still tells the body that the stomach still wants food. This can spiral out of control until your child is eating large amounts of food constantly increasing the risks of the above health problems.

Emotional problems - a child who is overweight or obese may begin to hate their body, not only this but they also become a target for bullies this can be extremely upsetting. If this type of thing continues it could lead to the child developing depression.

If your child is extremely overweight or obese then you should speak to a doctor about the best way to help them lose weight. A doctor can advise you on certain diets that will help your child lose weight. If the weight problems are a result of psychological problems then further medical assistance may be required.

Preventing your child from becoming obese - you should try and prevent your child from putting on weight as it can easily spiral out of control. Don't let your child have access to unhealthy foods and ensure they get plenty of exercise on a daily basis. If you have to confiscate their games consoles and televisions then go ahead and do it. There health is the most important thing.

Things you can do to help your child-ensure your children have access to healthy food on a daily basis and you should encourage your children to drink water rather than pop. If your child has a sweet tooth then you should restrict the amount of sweets they eat.
