 Teen Obesity - Parents' Responsibilities

The sight of obese children or teens is perhaps one of the most disheartening things you could imagine. It is awful for any teen to be so overweight that they cannot have any semblance of a social life and this can only lead to constant depression. They struggle to make friends at school and they are bullied because of their weight. To compound matters, their health will surely suffer as medical complications are never far away when someone is obese. We must strive to help our teens shake their harmful lifestyle and adopt one of healthy living!

Teen obesity is a complex issue as weight gain is not always caused by sedentary behaviour or over eating. It can also be due to the medical history of their family in both recent and past generations. Even so, not all teen obesity has a genetic root - prevailing medical conditions can also be an instigator. Glandular or thyroid problems are often contributory factors, but then obesity itself creates further problems. If you don't wish to see your teen experience the cruelty that their peers can convey, then steps must be taken to help your teen lose weight, and quickly!

As parents we should be we encouraging our teens to get out of the house more often and not to sit inside all day playing with computers or games consoles and watching TV. They need to be taught what a healthy diet is and that fast, convenient foods which so many rely on nowadays are significantly harming their bodies. They need to see that there are healthy alternatives to the fat laden products they are used to. Accomplish this and you will be helping to win the fight against teen obesity and liberating our children from a future full of health and emotional problems caused by the scourge of obesity.

Teens should be encouraged whenever possible to take up physical activities such as organised sports or exercise classes such as aerobics or just plain, old swimming. Regular exercise and a healthy diet will result in the body burning more calories than it is consuming, which is the bedrock of all weight loss diets. The sooner in an overweight teens' life this can be taken up the better, as obesity needs to be dealt with at an early stage in order that the bad habits don't become an unfixable way of life.

Parents must make the effort now to help combat teen obesity and return their children to their natural size. If you want your teen to lose weight and fight their obesity problem, why not lead by example? Healthy living should be demonstrated by parents first, so that the children can learn as they naturally would anyway. Teens must be aware of the consequences of being obese and shown the way to a healthier, happier future!
