 MS Signs and Symptoms

There are over 50 MS signs and symptoms with more being discovered all the time. A complex disease that affects the central nervous system, there is literally no part of the body that multiple sclerosis does not affect. Symptoms vary in terms of their severity and how long they last as well as how they are treated. While there are some treatments for MS itself, many of the treatments available focus on treating the symptoms of this disease.

Cognitive dysfunction is one of the most common of the MS signs and symptoms, and yet they are often overlooked as benign or not associated with this disease. This group of symptoms includes short term memory problems, attention difficulties, and difficulty in assimilating and processing information. It is difficult and overwhelming for the MS patient to organize thoughts and tasks and they can easily get overwhelmed trying.  Between 35 and 66% of multiple sclerosis patients suffer from some sort of cognitive impairment and often this can be one of the earliest signs but may be passed off as something else like being overtired or stressed.

Fatigue; which is closely intertwined with cognitive dysfunction is another one of the MS signs and symptoms that is very common. Fatigue can often aggravate brain function symptoms making it very difficult for a person to get thru some days. Often called MS lassitude fatigue can come from a variety of sources; the demyelination in the central nervous system is a primary cause with heat, sleep disturbances, over exertion and medication contributing to it greatly as well. Fatigue in multiple sclerosis can be very overwhelming making it impossible for a person to complete in the most basic tasks for themselves on a bad day.

Spasticity and stiffness in another one of the most common MS signs and symptoms, this symptom is best understood as the muscles inability to relax as much or as easily as they should. Spasticity tends to be asymmetrical meaning that it most often occurs on one side of the body, and it also occurs more frequently in the legs than it does in the arms. This symptom is the one that is most responsible for immobility in patients, as severe spasms make muscles rigid and unable to respond to the movements necessary for walking.

There are nearly as many treatments for MS and its symptoms are there are symptoms, and what treatment a doctor might prescribe will be based on the type of multiple sclerosis you have as well as the symptoms you are having.
