Inadequate Sleep Can Lead to Obesity in Children?

According to the latest results of one research published on the “Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine” in September, infants and preschool-aged children with insufficient nighttime sleep is probably at risk of subsequent obesity. More specifically, this study which is conducted in the University of California and University of Washington in Seattle considers the connection between sleep and weight among 1,930 children from 0 to 13 years joining in a survey in 1997 and in 2002 again.

In the first place, if the children at the age of around 4 surveyed for the first time sleep for under 10 hours per night, they are linked to a twofold risen danger of being obese at the second survey. In addition, the older children sleep time at the first survey was not linked with weight condition at the second survey. However, the present short sleep time was related to the increased weight in comparison with the normal weight.

Obesity in childhood is one of the serious issues noticed, and proper remedial measures should be implemented

According to Dr. Janice F. Bell of the University of Washington, this study recommended that early childhood should play an important role in a child’s growth as the nighttime sleep can influence his or her future weight status. Also, the National Sleep Foundation added that toddlers at the age of from 1 to 3 were advised to have a 12 to 14 hour nighttime sleep. Meanwhile, the preschoolers at the age of from 3 to 5 years and from 5 to 10 as well as teens are supposed to sleep from sleep 11 to 13 hours, from 10 to 11 hours, and from 8.5 to 9.25 hours at night, respectively.

Being obese increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis and some cancers

Lack of sleep can lead to obesity in children

According to the research carried out by Bell and fellow researcher Dr. Frederick Zimmerman of the University of California Several, there are also more studies showing the association between short sleep and weight in children and teens. However, these researches were conducted at a single time point, so it is quite complicated to consider short night sleep time as the cause of obesity in children. One more thing, these results gave a crucial time point in the growth of a child when enough sleep is of great importance to his or her weight afterwards. Bell also offered some theories for the inadequate sleep which leads to excess weight of a child that short sleep time can make a child not want to participate in the daily activities or eat less. Last but not least, similar to adults, children are also proven to have changed levels of the appetite- and hunger-related hormones leptin and ghrelin if they do not sleep for enough time.

The weight may start from muscle, bone, fat and/or body water

In addition to food intake, exercise and genetic background, sleep appears to be involved in weight control
