Tips to Handle Obesity in Children

Obesity is definitely on the rise among children, especially in India that too in the urban areas. Because they prefer computer games and the TV in place of outdoor activities. I have seen many children wasting much of their time playing computer games. These games are enervating in nature. They do not help the children to become intellect. Obesity whether in childhood or while aged is not desirable. Nowadays we do not see children playing with joy in a field. Except cricket, other games like run to catch the other, (Folk-play) etc are not being played to the best advantage.

Childhood obesity is attributed much to sedentary lives and the poor eating habits of children.

Many parents give their children pocket money to spend. Such practices have contributed to their sedentary life styles. Parents are always busy with their work schedules. They do not have time to talk to their children or play with them. They do not have an eye on their activities. The children usually do not have knowledge of the effects of eating habits. So they stick to untimely eating of unwanted items. Especially they eat chocolates and sweets. All these make them obese at their young age. Obesity in a tender age makes them obese as adults in most cases. In schools and colleges they become a laughing stock.

Obese kids are also susceptible to hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, gall stones, osteoarthritis and even diabetes. As a parent one should plan early to safe guard the children from becoming overweight. It is always, important to prevent the problem from happening in the first place.

A few tips may help:

* Don't make your child eat when he or she is not hungry. Do not force them to eat when you sit for lunch or dinner. Also check your child for loss of appetite if any.

* Don't use food to comfort or as a reward. Usually father or mother brings chocolate or sweets to the children. Such practices should never be cultivated.

* Do riot offer dessert or fried foods as a reward for finishing a meal. Then the children prefer sweets etc. more than other foods. Take time for a meal. Let the children have two nutritious meals a day.

* Take care to offer your child a healthy diet. If you want you can ask a doctor or a dietitian to teach you about the right kind of food for your child.

You may give fruits, vegetables and grains which are rich in fiber. Not more than 30 percent of all the. Calories your child eats should be from fat.

* Better serve hot foods (not too hot) during meals. Do not offer them stale food or that has become unfit to eat. It is good food is prepared both the times in a day.

* Don't take children to fast food restaurants often. Limit it to twice to thrice a month. Eating out should not become a practice.

* Restrict viewing TV program. Try to get your child to do some activity.

Example: Cycling, Walking, Playing ball, running a short distance, Playing Table Tennis.

* Allow your children to do some exercises either in the morning or evening. The exercises may be yogic also.

* Spend time with your child. You may be a business man or an official. You must spare daily at least one hour to spend with your children.

Play out door games with them. Go for a walk with your family.

* Avoid giving, pocket money unless they are taught how to use it. Here a joke may be given as an example.

A son had bad habits like drinking alcohol, playing cards, smoking and what not. This was all due to pocket money and friends who misguided him. One day his father told him to leave off all the bad habits and he would be given a thousand rupees a month. The sudden reply came. Do you know what the son said: "Father, why do I need money if I do not have bad habits?"
