The recession which began in December 2007 has been the longest and deepest downturn for the U.S. economy since the Great Depression. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the recession ended in June 2009. To certain minority groups in the U.S., it may feel more like a depression. At the end of 2009, the percentage of whites unemployed was below 9.7% while African-Americans saw 15.5% and Hispanics 12.4%. There is hardly good news on unemployment figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the last few weeks this year, especially minority unemployment. Let’s check some shocking facts about minority unemployment across America.
College-educated whites have more chances to find jobs than blacks. The unemployment rate among white mal college graduates over 25 is 4.4 percent, 3.4 percent lower than that of black male college graduates over 25.
There has been steady increase in the black unemployment for two years. Since September 2008, the rate has risen to 15.9 percent from 11.2 percent this year. The racial unemployment gap continues to widen. Hispanic unemployment jumped to 12.2 percent in 2009 from 7.6 percent in September 2008. The rate fell 0.3% by September 2010.

A recent unemployment survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated that the percentage of white people who are out of work was at 8.7 while that of the Hispanic and the black were at 12.4 and 16.1 respectively.
The foreclosure crisis has hit the black harder. According to report by HuffPost’s William Alden, whites were not three times as likely as blacks to receive subprime loans.
The Detroit metro area has 20.9%, the highest black unemployment rate. The Minneapolis-St. Paul area and Missouri region has a black unemployment rate of 20.4 percent and 17.3 percent while the white unemployment rates are at 6.6 percent and 8.4 percent in turn.
Minority unemployment rate was different in certain cities.
Unemployment statistics do not include 2.3 million people incarcerated. At present, 11.4 percent of blacks are incarcerated.
49.1 percent of minority teens are out of work.
