Natural Childbirth - Six Ways to Bring Your Child Into the World Without Drugs

Have you seen the documentary The Business of Being Born? It is an excellent movie produced by Ricki Lake that takes an honest look at home birthing vs. hospital birthing and examines why the rate of Cesarean sections (C-sections) continues to sharply increase in the US. Here are six ways to protect your baby and yourself and have a beautiful natural birth.

Use hypnosis. There are several home self-hypnosis courses you can purchase. The one I used for both of my births was Hypnobabies. It is a wonderful program that will educate you about childbirth as well as prepare you for a relaxing, shorter "birthing time" (Hypnobabies-speak for labor and delivery.) For me, the best part about this program was that it helped me to feel relaxed and confident during my pregnancies.

Have a home birth. Women have been doing it for centuries. To have the safest home birth possible, you should hire a certified-nurse midwife (CNM). Why birth at home? You will be more relaxed and comfortable in your own surroundings as compared to a hospital. You can eat and drink during your labor, something that you usually are not allowed to do in a hospital. And you would have the option to have a water birth.

Hire a midwife. CNMs have specialized training in both midwifery and nursing. They are more specialized in normal, healthy birthing than OB/GYNs. They can handle some emergencies but will know when or if you need to transfer to a hospital.

Hire a doula. A doula is a birth assistant who will help you, your partner, and your midwife with whatever you need during your birthing time. For example, a doula can help you relax with a massage or put you into special positions to assist you in birthing your baby.

Deliver your baby in water. Water birthing will help you to relax and ease your contractions or "pressure waves." It can be done in a bathtub, but it is best if you rent a special birthing pool to be most comfortable. The baby is actually born underwater and pulled up to the surface before baby's first breath.

Check into a birthing center. This is a good compromise if you are nervous about birthing at home but want to avoid being pushed into using drugs or having a non-essential C-section at a hospital. Many birthing centers allow you to have a midwife and birth in water. And their rates of C-sections are much lower than hospitals.

One of the best aspects of natural birthing is that you are in control of your body and your baby. You make the decisions that are right for the two of you. Just relax and enjoy the moment with awestruck wonder and Nature will take care of the rest.
