Do you eat a lot of high fat dairy, cereal, red meat, or processed foods? Then be prepared for it to show up on your face in the form of wrinkles and age spots. These foods have a proven association with discoloration as well as deeper and more plentiful wrinkles.
What should you eat to keep skin looking young and fresh? A study published in 2001 in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition asked the same question and reviewed the relationship between diet and wrinkles. The study looked at more than 2000 people aged 70 or older from several different countries including; Japan, Sweden, Greece, China, and Australia. Their diets were examined in great detail and the analysis showed that nutrition directly influences 30% of our skin quality as we age.
In addition, the study identified several power foods when it comes to fighting wrinkles and age related discoloration. Study participants whose diets included these power foods on a regular basis had fewer wrinkles and younger looking skin.
These anti-aging power foods include:
Fruits: Prunes, apples, cherries, melons, grapes, pears, and jam
Vegetables: Lima Beans, green leafy vegetables such as spinach, eggplant, onions, leeks, garlic, olives, asparagus, and celery.
Fats: Olive oil.
Grains: Multigrain bread.
Protein: Salmon
Dairy: Eggs and yogurt.
Beverages: Water and tea.
If this list is overwhelming or you hate spinach, donât panic. Researchers found that prunes, apples, tea, and olive oil packed the most anti-aging punch. Or you can take nutritional supplements. Vitamins are the active ingredients in the power foods and studies have demonstrated their anti-aging properties.
In 2005, The Journal of Investigative Dermatology published a study showing that vitamins A and E protect against free radical damage. Free radicals destroy the elastin and collagen that keep skin smooth and firm. Worse, free radicals are unavoidable. The only way to counteract free radical damage is with antioxidants derived either from food or vitamin supplements. Topical antioxidants such as Vitamin C and D3PA, which are both key ingredients in Lifecell wrinkle cream, complement and enhance the effects of nutritional antioxidants.
Remember, while eating the power foods or adding supplements to your diet, also reduce saturated fat, sugar, whole milk products, and red meat as they exacerbate the development of wrinkles. And because nutrition is only 30% of the answer, donât forget a good skin care regimen.
