You may have been wondering if you need a drinking water purification system. You may think that ordinary tap water is safe to drink, but how safe is it really? That innocent looking glass of clear liquid may be polluted with trace amounts of chlorine, lead, drugs, pesticides and other harmful chemicals. You may need to start questioning the quality and safety of your drinking water.
Question #1: Is water pollution a real threat to your health or not?
Sadly the answer to this question is yes. The evidence is increasing with each study that is done. The chlorine in our drinking water increases your risk of developing cancer and may act as a trigger for asthma. Small amounts of lead have been linked to the development of learning disorders in children and to hypertension in men. Agricultural pesticides and herbicides are washed out and into the groundwater.
It is estimated that the drinking water of the United States of America is polluted with numerous chemicals that can cause cancer. This is an important factor in the high rates of cancer diagnosed within the country. Yes, water pollution is a real threat to you and your family's health.
Question #2: Is tap water unsafe to drink?
We as a industrialized society use about 75,000 to 80,000 harmful chemicals for different operations and functions. We either forget or ignore the fact that most of these chemicals end up in the groundwater from which we get our public water supply. Many water treatment facilities are old and cannot filter out these harmful chemicals. Contaminated water ends up in our homes. Yes, unless tested and confirmed safe, you should consider ordinary tap water as a risk to your good health and not safe to drink.
Question #3: Are all drinking water treatment systems equally effective?
No. Some filters are more effective at purifying than others. However, any filter is better than no filter at all. You can start off by buying a cheap pitcher filter if your money is tight. However, in the long run a drinking water purification system is more effective and cheaper to maintain.
Question #4: Why is chlorine added to our public water supply and how safe is it?
Chlorine is used as a disinfectant in order to stop diseases such as typhoid and cholera from spreading. Chlorine is the cheapest solution to killing bacteria that might cause sickness and death. This is adequate for most purposes, but it is not healthy to drink. Chlorine and its byproducts have been linked to illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. Therefore, chlorinated tap water should be filtered before drinking it.
Question #5: Is filtered water better than distilled water for your health?
Filtered water is better since it still contains trace amounts of inorganic minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium. Distilled water tends to be mineral deficient with an acidic pH. For best results your drinking water should be purified of harmful chemicals while still retaining its natural balance of minerals.
Water pollution has become a real threat to our health and that of our children. Do not rely on public treatment facilities to provide you with safe drinking water. You may use drinking water treatment systems in your own home to provide you with pure, healthy, safe and refreshing water whenever you want at a reasonable cost.
