 Does Alcohol Aid Snoring?

It is a known fact that over 35% of the global population snorers on a regular basis, but most of the people are unaware about the real cause of their snoring. Studies and medical research on sleep related disorders including snoring have concluded that usually snoring increases due to obesity, smoking and alcohol intake apart from secondary causes such as respiratory diseases, side effects of medication or pregnancy.

One of the most common contributors to increasing snoring is alcohol consumption. Usually a drink in the evening is considered the modern way of relaxing and unwinding, in our hectic pace of lifestyles. Yes, alcohol numbs the brain and relaxes the muscles, leaving that euphoric and stress free feeling. But mostly it over relaxes the muscles such that the throat, mouth, jaw muscles loosen up and the back of the throat or orophanyx begins to collapse, narrowing the airways and obstructing normal respiration.

Specific research on the ill effects of alcohol has pointed out nasal congestion which in turn, increase your chances of snoring on a nightly basis. Other factors that aid snoring is smoking, which causes immense inflammation in the trachea, breathing passages and clogs up the lungs, leading to respiratory illness and snoring.

The best way to stop snoring would be to stop smoking and alcohol consumption, but if that seems very far fetched, try not to consume any alcoholic beverage at least 4-6 hours before you go to bed. The gap of 4 hours will help lessen the hard hitting effects of over relaxation of muscles as by then, alcohol's reaction starts wearing out.

Sometimes, people take sleep inducing medication, such as sleeping pills for a relaxed night's sleep or to cure insomnia, but it all aggravates snoring, due to loss of muscle tightening required for sound breathing patterns. Constant snoring through out the night can be a serious irritant to the bed partner while the sleep deprivation that sets in for both the snorer and the bed partner further complicates the relationship. There have been increasing cases of divorces based on messed up relationships that stem from sleep deprivation due to snoring.

Apart from the interpersonal relationship issues, sleep deprivation due to snoring also leads to health hazards for both. Serious diseases such as cancer, hypertension, diabetes and strokes are generally triggered due to stress and poor sleeping patterns. People over the age of 40 are more prone to these diseases and additional smoking and drinking can kick-start a fatal threat of snoring and related illnesses.

Basically, if you have alcohol induced snoring or you are a regular snorer who drinks, it is time to cut back on your intake and also think about using some non invasive techniques like anti snoring drops, herbal all natural throat sprays, mouth guards and chin straps to make sure that you stop snoring. These are easily available over the counter in drug stores and supermarkets. Not only will you find them effective, you will also feel better after a complete night's rest. You and your family deserve to live happily and healthier, isn't it?
