 Detox For Pennies a Day

Ever feel like just sweating up a storm without a grueling workout? I know I do! Sweating is an excellent way to rid your body of toxins. After all, the skin is your body's largest organ -- it is often referred to as the 3rd kidney.

Salt baths help eliminate toxins from your body by way of osmosis. For those not sure of meaning of osmosis, here's what Webster Dictionary has to say: movement of a solvent (as water) through a semi permeable membrane (as of a living cell) into a solution of higher solute concentration that tends to equalize the concentrations of solute on the two sides of the membrane. Salt baths help soften your skin and relax your muscles.

There are many different salt bath 'recipes' as well as premixed salt bath solutions sold. The following are three different baths I enjoy taking: This first one is by far the easiest because it consists of one ingredient (water softening salt). You can purchase a 40 lb. Bag of Morton's White Crystal Water Softening Salt or Pool Salt. This can be found at most large grocery stores (usually up front by the check out for approximately $ 10). Or, you can go to your local large hardware/home improvement store and get it for almost half the price.

Use 5-10 cups of salt in warm to hot water and soak for 20 minutes or more. Rinse with cold water for as long as it takes you to cool off. Cold water helps stop the sweating, close pores, and it is a form of water therapy for your body. Going from hot to cold water helps get the blood moving and unblock congested areas.

The second bath recipe is an Alkalizing Bath -- this bath helps to pull out toxins AND alkalize your body, thereby ridding it of excess disease producing acid.

· 2 -- 3 cups Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate)

· 1 -- 2 cups Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) -- there are aluminum free brands.

· Hydrogen Peroxide -- 1 pint of 3% solution or 1.5 ounces of 35% Food Grade solution.

Fill tub with hot water (that you can tolerate). Mix in Epsom Salt and Baking Soda. When tub is full, add in Hydrogen Peroxide. You want to stay in the water for at least 10 minutes working your way up to 30 minutes. This will allow your body time to sweat.

A word of caution . . . be careful when finished, stand up slo-o-o-wly. Your body was eliminating toxins, so you may feel dizzy. Once up, and have your balance, take a cold water (only) shower. Be sure to do this as long as it takes for you to cool off -- you can feel quite ill if you don't. This will stop your body from releasing toxins. Drink plenty of fluids after any detox bath. If you are weak or ill, you can soak your feet, and/or take a 10-minute bath instead, but always follow with cold shower.

The third recipe will also get your body sweating and the same rules apply (follow with a cold shower). Add the following to a hot tub: 1-cup Epsom salt, 1 tsp. powdered Ginger, and 1 pint 3% Hydrogen Peroxide to your bath water.

Every bath listed will help your body release toxins via the skin. There are plenty of premixed salt bath packets, but these work just as well and cost much less. If you want to pump up the volume of sweating, drinking hot tea while in the bath will help you sweat more. If I have the time and I feel like sweating even more, I'll jump on my rebounder (mini trampoline) or jump rope for 10 -15 minutes before my bath. Not only will the rebounder help warm up your body, it is excellent at getting your lymph fluid moving. Once in the bathtub, or before going in, you can brush your skin (with a wet/dry skin brush). This will get your lymph fluid moving even more, it will improve your circulation, AND it helps rid your body of cellulite. Gotta like that!

If you get bored in the bathtub or you find yourself counting down the time to get out, consider giving yourself a mini manicure. Your cuticles will be soft and easy to push back. How about having pumice stone handy for the rough areas on your feet? The possibilities are endless - a good book also helps pass the time.
