If you like snakes, you will probably fall in love with rope fish. If you hate snakes, you will not want a this fish in your aquarium. That's because the rope fish looks exactly like a swimming snake. It is even sometimes known as a snake fish.
This fish is a large predatory fish that cannot be in the same tank with smaller or submissive fish. They can be housed together nicely in groups of five or six. They are also okay with fish which are larger than they are. You will need a big aquarium to keep rope fish because each one grows to be two feet long in captivity. They are even larger in the wild. You should get a tank that is at least 55 gallons.
Rope fish like to have a pH level that is between 6.5 and 7.5. They prefer temperatures to be in the 72 to 80 range. So far none of these fishes have bred in aquariums. You can tell the difference between males and females because the male has more spikes on his top fins. A unique feature of this fish is that it can breathe out of water for a short time. This is particularly useful if the fish should jump out of the tank, which they have been known to do on occasion.
This fish comes from Africa. They are a shade of brown and olive but they also have a reddish tint on their stomachs. Rope fish are also nocturnal so don't expect them to be swimming about too much during the daytime. If you are going to keep rope fish you can't be finicky because they are carnivores and they only eat live food. That means every day you need to feed the fish some mix of shrimp, fish, worms and insects.
It is very important that you make a place for the fish to hide. Plants, rocks, caves and driftwood are all good solutions. Without hiding places they will be uncomfortable with the environment because in their own way they are a very shy fish. Once they know you, however, they will be very friendly and interact. Some people even get their rope fish to eat out of their hands. If you try, you might be able to get your fish to eat frozen meaty foods after they have lived with you for some time. One of the favorite foods of rope fish are live bloodworms.
These fishes are not easy to find in pet stores but can be found at one or two online aquarium stores. Make sure you get several so that they can stay healthy and active by interacting with one another.
