 About Sinusitis

This is a common question that is asked regularly - what kind of bacteria infect the sinus cavities? Sinusitis affects the paranasal sinuses which can result from a bacterial, viral, fungal and autoimmune situation and can cause a serious infection.

An upper respiratory infection which is viral in origin is often associated with acute sinusitis. If the patient presents with a streptococcus infection this may have been caused from a bacterial infection in the sinus passages.

Staph aureus and other bacterial pathogens can result with very serious implications. Bacterial sinusitis is a persistent strain and usually anaerobic and gram negative bacteria are identified. You could end up having a surgical procedure or your doctor will keep prescribing antibiotics, neither are pleasant options. You could try homeopathic treatment, which might be helpful. Sinus irrigation with xylitol could be helpful too.

There are basically empty spaces in your head which are the sinus cavities. These cavities serve to provide an essential function in that they protect your body from any foreign matter like dust and pollens that we breathe in daily; these foreign bodies are what cause inflammatory conditions.

Scientists are still battling to understand hat causes chronic sinusitis; but it is well known that allergies caused by pollen, environmental factors and dust worsen the condition as well as seasonal change. Some of the bacteria causing sinusitis are H. Influenza, M. Catarrhalis and S. Pneumonia.

When you have chronic sinusitis you will experience headaches, nasal congestion, fever as well as a thick discharge. Very narrow sinus passages are also a factor which could contribute to chronic sinusitis.

Once you have sinusitis, it in turn weakens your immune system leaving you open to other infections. You depend on your sinuses to be clear and healthy as you are dependent on these passages to breathe properly.
